How to: Configure Colloquy on the Mac
My live broadcast viewers often ask me how to configure Colloquy to work with the Ustream.tv chat rooms. I have been meaning to make a video about this, but I figure it is easier to follow along with some simple step by step screenshots. For those wondering what exactly Colloquy is, it is an application that allows you to interact with chat rooms without actually having to use a web browser. Not only is this free, but it also provides a much more flexible user experience.
The first thing you will want to do is navigate through the Menu Bar by clicking Window and then choosing Connections, as seen below:
You are now looking at the Connections window. This is where you do the initial setup.
To create a new connection, click the New button in the top-left corner of the window. Doing this will open the following window:
This New Connection window is where it all happens. The above fields are in relation to my user name, password and specified chat room. Those settings are up to you. The most important ones to know, if you're planning to connect to Ustream, are the chat server and chat server port. I prefer to use chat1.ustream.tv as my chat server, but you are also welcome to use chat2.ustream.tv and c.ustream.tv. Any of those three will work fine. However you must use 6667 as the chat server port. This is the standard for all chat rooms. As for the chat room itself, that setting depends on where you're trying to connect. The # sign is always required to be at the beginning of the name.
Be sure to check the option Remember this connection if you want to connect to the same room without having to set everything up everytime you launch Colloquy. If you have any questions, please post them in the comments section and I will be sure to answer them.
Colloquy can be downloaded here. If you are looking for an alternative application, then I recommend checking out X-Chat Aqua. Windows users may be interested in X-Chat 2.
