Wanted: iPhone Developer

I'm going to be straight and to the point with this. Apple's App Store is hot right now and it shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon. After reading this article on Mashable, you can't blame me for being motivated. I've actually been wanting to create an iPhone app for a while now. Unfortunately, I do not have the patience to learn the iPhone SDK. Believe me, I've tried.

I am writing today in hopes of finding someone capable of developing an app for the iPhone and iPod touch platforms, as well as the iPad if you so choose. What kind of app am I looking for? Obviously it would have to be something that has the potential to take off, but as of right now I have nothing particular in mind. It could be a simple flashlight app with a unique twist or something as complicated as an arcade shooter. The only requirements I ask of the developer are the following:

  • App is free to download
  • Included iAd support to help pay for costs
  • Revenue from iAd earnings will be shared

That last bullet point is an important one. In exchange for share of iAd revenue, your app will be strongly promoted in the form of social networks, especially Twitter and YouTube. Details can be discussed via email, so please contact me here if you are interested. Serious inquiries with existing portfolios are preferred.

Update: Please note, this is not intended to be a quick way of gaining exposure or making money. If all goes well, I am hoping for this to turn into a long-term partnership that could possibly include future projects. Also, if requested by said developer, I am willing to pay a fee upfront for the time and labor that will be put into development.

Waow I can see that there IS a lot of monies to be made in this!

I'm a bit confused by this post. Why would a developer want to partner up with you and share the revenue from an app they develop and not just create an app themselves and keep all the revenue? I'm not trying to be an a-hole or anything even though I probably sound like it, I'm just wondering why they'd want to team up with you and share their proits? Maybe you have something unique to bring to the table that you didn't mention that would make developers want to work with you. I mean I don't have enough skills to develop an iPhone app or anything but I'm just wondering why they would want to team up with you. Because honestly while I was reading this it seemed like "Make an app and give me some of the money" I know thats obviously not what you meant but thats what it seemed like to me when I read through this. Maybe you should mention why a dev would want to team with you and share their rev. Sorry I'm being overly critical and sounding like a d-bag but was just confused a bit.

Frank, I understand why you're questioning this post. I had the feeling someone would. My idea behind this is to start a good partnership with someone, which in return would give said developer the proper exposure he or she deserves. This would be done in the form of advertising on my YouTube channel, Twitter and possibly a sidebar banner at no extra charge. I don't expect my share of revenue to be anything too significant at the start. My plan is to start small and hopefully gain momentum as time goes on and the downloads come in.

I should also mention that I am willing to pay a fee upfront for the time and labor that will be put in during development. It's never my intention to take advantage of a situation like this. I am simply looking to get involved in the App Store community. Hopefully this reply clears some things up. I do appreciate your honesty, so thank you!

I'm glad Frank asked that question, because I really wanted to but also did not want to seem like an a-hole or d-bag.... because it really seems like you are just saying 'im so good, important, significantly better than others, and have so much gem exposure you could never get, you will want to do all the work and share profits with me for free, just because i am who i am and you are a nobody' ...

chances are if a developer can get as far as they need to to fulfill the apple requirements (smartly, which means having adequate legal protection, which means ideally setting up your own LLC first and then applying as a business developer not an individual, so you dont have to worry about getting your as* sued and the pants taken right off you if anything goes wrong... or even if you win the lawsuit, have fun spending 10K on a lawyer in the meanwhile fighting it to get it dismissed) if someone goes through that, learning the SDK, developing the entire program themself, im pretty sure in their eyes that the more flexible, easy, and worthwhile and fair approach is to have them finish the last 5%, not have you David finish the last 5% promo but rake in 30-50% of the profits. Furthermore, if thecreativeone isn't set up as an LLC yet, you might want to consider running with that idea not only for tax breaks, but deductions you can legit take for computers, etc. all whilst protecting your bum and securing your hard earned cash from some wacko who wants to make a quick buck from you and/or just take you to the cleaners in lawyers fees because they want to be mean. If someone spent $1,000 on pics/advertisements theyd get far more hits and bang-for-your-buck than potentially sharing $10,000 in iAD revenue with you by splitting that into two. the ratios just arent in your favor buddy. Now trusted and respected sources (your youtube channel) do have its place and have a strong marketing and branding approach that enables you to act as a trusted mentor and reviewer, in which case your viewers are of higher caliber and quality and will trust what you recommend to download and will be more willing to do so to try it than just a blind ad... BUT there are other youtube channel's and vbloggers out there whom would be more than happy to, say, take $1,000 upfront one-off and place a banner on their website for a few weeks and make a mention of the program in their video... for a one off fee.... this approach of making the developer do all the work and you constantly reaping the benefits i dont think will cut it.... as the developer says, other than getting visibility (which can be gained elsewhere, hate to break it to you) what am I getting from David? No dev programming, No business plan, No development cycles, No 'secretary' approach to handle the red-tape/time-cumbersome nitty-gritty stuff (ie: calling up apple, setting up burocracy iAD accounts or whatever) as if hes developing not for a LLC then legally you cant call up Apple and say 'Im david calling on behalf of developer x with his full authority' aint gonna happen.... so hes stuck doing evvverrrrything. Maybe it would be more enticing and seem less stuck-up and proud if you had a business plan you already researched and wanted to implement?

It looks from your reply to Frank that you are willing to negotiate more and throw down money, which shows that your open to ideas, but the original post sure doesnt seem like it (your requirements, etc.when it shoudl really be the developers requirements or a closed-door talk). Take all your youtube channel subscribers and divide that out by the average iAD revenue per-click and then run the numbers..... then split that by two people.... and thats assuming all the ppl download it. As for paying the developer in response to Frank's post, that sounds much better, but these are the things people want to know.... not whats in this post... are you prepared to foot the developers bill or costs associated? Are you aware of how much Objective-C iPhone programmers cost on an hourly rate? your going to be having to some pretty nice cheques being written out of your account.... I dont think your fully prepared for the real facts of this, and the post comes off as a way im sure you don't want it to be read; but thats the thing, posts are for other people to read, not for your-sole viewing pleasure, and if your intended audience (developers, entrepreneurs, venture capitalists) don't agree, understand, or see the fundamentals of what you are trying to convey in your post, then you will attract the wrong kind of attention, partner, or no partner at all, and just alienate and offend your community that you are trying to win-over. It may not seem like I'm trying to be helpful, and I'm not intending this to be easy reading, nor is it a personal attack in any way, im just raising the flag and throwing some real facts down and trying to splash some cold water on ya buddy. I am familiar with the iPhone SDK Objective-C however my plate is full so unable to assist you provided I felt like engaging in that nature with you. But I am happy to guide and direct you and help you setup properly conducted things like your own LLC if you don't have one yet, as I want to foster your personal growth.

Kevin,

I appreciate your honest input, so thank you for taking the time to say all that. Hopefully with the update I included after the initial post, you have a better idea of what I am looking for, which is a partnership in the long run. This isn't about making a quick buck. I want to get myself involved in the app developing community. Whether or not this is the correct way, I'm not sure. But at least it's something. I realize there are legalities to take into consideration. All the details will be handled privately between the developer and myself.

Basically what David is doing is endorsing the app like a celebrity endorses products, the celebrity helps the product sell and he/she also gets paid.

Personally, I'd love to get into this if I had the necessary development skills.(I have some iPhone skills, but most certainly not enough. Maybe I'm just stupid, or I come from a background of the wrong programming language)

There are several reasons why a partnership such as this would be beneficial, at least to someone like me(I don't know, maybe you too) and here are three main reasons:

Advertising - I don't want to handle that crap. Too difficult. David may not have unbelievable exposure, but as I type he's 4 subscribers away from 30,000. 29,996. Not to mention, he knows more about that stuff than I do ;)

Business - As Kevin mentioned, there are many business aspects to something like this, and the world's legal systems have long confused me. I wanted to get a simple trademark and after reading for about 2 hours, I gave up because I couldn't understand any of it and it was so ridiculously complicated. At the very least, David would more than likely simply help me understand what the hell was going on.

Ideas/creativity - This probably isn't huge for other people, but I'm not creative. I've also long since considered making an iPhone app, but aside from lack of skills, my main issue has been lack of ideas(considering I want to make something that actually has a use). I'm more technical than creative. If you ask me to build something, I can do it; but ask me to come up with an idea... well, don't wait on me. On the other hand, I can think of many useful things that go inside the big picture. I think that combination with David could be an explosion of chocolaty goodness :) ....I mean.... something that isn't stolen from Cocoa Puffs...

So yeah. Personally, I'd totally get in on this.
